The type of homes and condos you’re going to find in Hintonburg: The average home is probably built before 1960 in a traditional style – 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom. It will probably have a stone foundation, or possibly a block foundation. The homes are a little bit smaller style and some will have additions. In terms of Condos – there are two ranges some of them are going to be built in the 80’s and 90’s with baseboard heating and a little bit bigger square footage and then there’s a bit of a gap before you start seeing new modern condos coming available, and currently available now. Built in the 2000’s and newer with modern facilities such as gyms, and swimming pools. However, these units are little bit smaller to fit today’s times. Those are the two types of properties you’re gonna see as you drive down some of the streets. You can start to see some infills now. Semi-Detached, Side by Sides and even back to back Semi-Detached to fit in the lots and maximize the amount of intensification the neighbourhood can fit. There’s really a little bit of everything – a mix of older style homes with character, and high baseboards and then you can have some new, modern homes as well.

Your average demographic in Hintonburg is going to be somewhere between 30 and 45 making up the majority of the population, or demographic, and then you’re still going to see some people that are kicking around that are anywhere between 45 and I’d say about 60. They typically still have some family members lingering around, or their parents have come back into the area. Those are the two demographics that you will probably find within the Hintonburg area.

The best features of the community, I think, is the Walk-a-bility and actually the people that are in the community. I’ve been lucky enough to attend some of the Council meetings and things like that and I’ve gotten to know my neighbours. There are some fantastic people. I would say the walk-a-bility is the best part – Once you go to work and get home all you need is a pair of shoes, or bike and you can go everywhere you want.

One of the unique features that my wife and I love to enjoy, and I think most of the people within Hintonburg, love to enjoy come spring, summer and fall time is actually the Parkdale Market. If you’re up early enough you’ll see every morning the trucks coming in and dropping off their fresh fruits and vegetables at around 6 AM, and they stay open until sundown at about 7 or 8 at night and are open all year round. You can get flowers, you can get all your groceries, produce things like that. It is a really nice place. They’ve also got some local fresh grocery stores in the area so you don’t necessarily always have to go to your Metros, Farm Boys or Superstores. There’s a lot of local farming places as well, in the neighbourhood. If you eat meat and you want local and great organic meats, Saslove’s Meat Market is a fantastic place as well.

When I choose to rest and relax in Hintonburg sometimes I’ll actually stroll down to Westboro Beach on a nice sunny day and lounge around there. There is a lot of spots, a lot of parks by the river that you can hop into. If you crossover John A. Macdonald Parkway you’ve got Lemieux Island as well that’s great if you wanna set up a towel and a book and read. If your dog’s a swimmer there’s  water access there, where they can jump in the water go for a swim and release their energy that way. LaRoche Park is somewhere we often take my dog, Memphis. I’ve got an 80 lb Boxer who gets along with most people there. This park turns into a baseball diamond in the summer and a hockey rink in the winter

There’s a couple of other good places to take your dogs; one up by Island Park and Carling, that you can actually see from the highway. It’s fully fenced in, so if your dog wanders away a little bit, I’d say that is probably the best one for you to go to.

If I was going to go out and eat somewhere – it depends on what we’re feeling that day. If you’re in a cultural mood, we’ve got great Indian restaurants, Thai food – Siam Bistro, is one of my wife and I’s favourite Thai places to go to. If you’re looking for some Artisan-style pizzas, Tennessee Williams is a great spot, Tacos – La Bonita. Basically, if you hit Wellington Street from Parkdale and you start to head West (or East) you’re going to fill your boots with all different sorts of types of foods in and around that area.
